The Coach’s Daughter
By Wandra Daniel McGowan
|
In the aftermath of
a heartbreaking job loss, my daddy finds hope in coaching his old high
school basketball team. But, when fate strikes another blow, can my family
survive the circumstances? Thrust into a web of deceit, my daddy gets the
shock of life!
The Coach's Daughter, an intriguing and heart-warming novel, is narrated
through the voice of a 12- year-old girl, Angel, whose Angelic-character and
wit become the glue that keeps the family focused in order to embrace the
heart-wrenching challenges that the family endures. The story is told
through the eyes of Angel, the couple’s 12-year-old daughter, who happens to
have an unpleasant habit-- eavesdropping on her parents. Even though her
mother has warned her many times about her annoying habit, Angel discovers
her father, Marcus Thomas, has been dismissed from his managerial position
at the University for no apparent reason; a secret her parents wanted to
keep from Angel and her younger brother, Mike.
Angel’s wit is inherited from the bosom of her maternal grandmother Mildred.
It is her grandmother Mildred who gives her the name “The Coach’s Daughter.”
Grandmother Mildred not only gives Angel her inspired wit, but she also
serves as the family comforter when there is the need for a shoulder to cry
upon.
As Angel watches her father’s moods change like night and day, she becomes
alarmed when her father sinks deeper into depression. She witnesses his
downward spiral as he tries to cope with the loss of his job and the real
reason he was terminated. Angel’s greatest fear is losing the father she
loves dearly.
The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns as Angel sees her
father lose his job, change careers, and later become one of the best
coaches, in every sense of the word. It is Angel who encourages her father
to consider coaching, and it is Angel who helps the team prepare for the
College Entrance exam and a life beyond the basketball courts. This is a
story of inspiration, love and family and it will keep the reader engaged
until the end.

“I truly enjoyed the story and the unusual plot twist. The fact that the
book was narrated through the eyes of a 12-year old child, gave it that
special touch that will make this novel a “MUST READ” for Sunday school
groups, Children’s in Youth homes, Step-families and all families.”

“The Coach’s Daughter is an engaging novel that supports academic standards
for athletes. I read the words (that you attributed to Coach Thomas) that
expressed indignation because the required GPA did not meet college entrance
requirements. Coach Thomas made a very convincing argument about a subject
that is dear to me.”

“The Coach's Daughter is full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep
you longing for the outcome of each scenario in this family's life. It's a
wildly intriguing ride that is tempered with sobering topics, warm
interludes, and even frankly spiritual journeys for the characters. Readers
are enveloped by this family's love and warmth as well as by the family's
strength and resilience. The beautiful balance between the nurturing,
benevolent mother and the strong, forthright father provides a solid base
for the family and a good foundation for the main storyline. Expect to be
entertained, blessed, and to get a little of the unexpected from this
exquisite novel, delivered to the reader through the eyes of a bright,
charming little girl."
